I don’t remember how many times I tried making bubble solution with tap water and washing up liquid.... and failed. However after some research and experiments, I think I’ve found an acceptable solution which is much cheaper than buying ready-made bubble mix. |
I also know now why it didn’t work in the past:
- London water is too hard, so using deionised water (distilled water) is much better. Robert Dyas sell it in 500ml and 3 litre bottles.
- Not all washing up liquids work, especially not anti-bacterial or sensitive liquids. Fairy Original works best I was told.
- Glycerine makes bubbles stronger. It’s easy to get. You’ll find it in Boots, next to the coughing syrup, for just under a pound.
- I always tried to use the bubble solution straightaway, however it works much better if used the day after.
This recipe is the one I used. It gives you big strong bubbles that have to be blown slowly. However, I find that it’s not very good for many small bubbles.
- 200ml deionised water
- 30ml Fairy original washing up liquid
- 15ml Glycerin
Mix ingredients using a spoon, avoiding too much foam. Fill into a bottle and let it sit overnight.
Enjoy the bubbles!

This blog is about family cooking. It's important to get together for family meals. Here I'm posting healthy family recipes that kids and adults will love and make cooking for the family more fun. All my family recipes are well balanced and healthy family recipes but they can be tweaked for fussy eaters or spiced up for a more sophisticated adult palate. In addition to the healthy family recipes, I'm publishing some of my knitting and crochet patterns for toddler toys and accessories.
